Window safety is something you must always consider, especially if you have young children at home. While many homeowners are aware of the risks involved whenever a window is left open, it is also important to take note of the fact that such a fixture can also save a child’s life. After all, with the right placement, it can play a huge role in keeping you and your family members safe in cases of emergency.

Follow this checklist to keep your home safe.

“Do I Keep Windows Closed When Children Are Around?”

Always close and lock your windows when your children are around. When ventilation is necessary, open only those that they can’t reach. Set and enforce rules on keeping children’s playtime away from the windows and doors. Pieces of furniture must be placed away from windows as well. Such objects can be used as a climbing aid, increasing the risk of accidents.

“Do We Have an Emergency Fire Escape Plan?”

Create a plan if you haven’t done so yet. Start by walking around your home, inspecting every possible exit and escape route. Guide your children on how to use egress windows, especially in case of fire or other related circumstances. You can also create a rough sketch of your home’s floor plan, marking the locations of the windows, doors and alarms. Practice your devised plan with your family regularly so that everyone is aware of what to do.

“Do I Regularly Maintain My Windows?”

Like any other home components, your windows must be inspected and maintained to ensure their flawless operation and optimal performance. See to it that they are in good working condition. Replace them when they show signs of disrepair. Operating an already damaged window can be dangerous.
