Safety is one of the primary concerns when converting a basement into a living area. In fact, local regulations won’t allow remodeling in this space without an egress window. While it brings more light in, it also provides an alternative escape route in case of emergency. It also serves as an access point for rescue specialists. WMGB Home Improvement discusses the things you need to know when installing this type of window.

Installing Egress Windows

Standard Size

You need to follow a certain size requirement when installing an egress window. It requires a minimum height of 24 inches and a minimum width of 20 inches. It also needs at least 5 square feet and 7 inches of net clear opening and a maximum of 44 inches above the floor for the sill height. When your window well, however, exceeds 44 inches, you need to place a permanent ladder.

At WMGB Home Improvement, we make sure that everything that we provide complies with local codes. Our egress windows are available in different sizes to fit your home. In addition, we use top-quality galvanized steel and other materials to ensure long-lasting performance.

What Window Style to Use

Aside from the size requirement, egress windows have to be operable from the inside without the aid of tools or keys. You can still incorporate bars or grills as long as they too can be easily opened. Moreover, the opening must be wide enough to crawl through.

Casement windows are ideal basement egress windows. Their side hinges and wide openings make it an easy outlet for escape. On the other hand, awning windows are the least suitable window style. Their opening hardware and hinges are centered in the middle and block the way out.

Egress windows do not only boost safety; they also add value to your home. WMGB Home Improvement offers excellent egress window installation services. To learn more, call us at (616) 328-6625. We serve residents of Grand Rapids and Lansing, MI.
