Attic insulation is one of the most important aspects of home insulation. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most overlooked as many are not familiar with or even aware of how to tackle this project. With that in mind, here are some steps to take before adding attic insulation.
Avoid Using the Attic for Storage
At best, attics should be left bare so the insulation can work properly. But for instances like having a smaller home where using the attic for storage cannot be avoided, it’s best to only store items that are resistant to temperature changes like sports equipment and seasonal decorations. Clear out important documents and other items that can become fire hazards.
Seal Air Leaks
No matter how well the blown-in insulation is installed, it will be rendered useless when the attic has not been correctly prepared. Sealing air leaks ensures that insulation materials are not wasted. Air infiltration allows moisture to seep into the attic, promoting mold and mildew growth, and compromising the insulation material. On the other hand, sealing air leaks creates an energy-efficient system by helping maintain ideal temperatures all year round. The process is the most crucial step. It also prevents the formation of ice dams during winter, offers better sound reduction and prevents pest and dust from entering.
Reinforce the Access Points
The first step of the insulation is, of course, to go to the attic, so make sure that the access point is indeed accessible. Part of why the attic is one of the most neglected areas in a home is due to its location. To remedy this, make sure that the entryway to the attic is prominent and safe to use.
Having done all the preliminary steps, you and your attic are now ready for the insulation installation. It can be quite challenging, but it isn’t impossible.
