Many vinyl replacement windows are an ideal option for your home due to their low-maintenance and energy-efficient properties. The fact is, vinyl windows owe their durability to their prime component, which is polyvinyl chloride or PVC.

Vinyl Material

WMGB Home Improvement, a leading provider of vinyl replacement windows, discusses some interesting facts about polyvinyl chloride.

What is Polyvinyl Chloride?

PVC is a synthetic resin made from the polymerization of vinyl chloride. It’s made by subjecting vinyl chloride to highly reactive compounds. It’s mostly used in a wide range of domestic and industrial products, from raincoats to window frames. It’s a lightweight rigid plastic manufactured in a flexible “plasticized” form.

What is Vinyl Chloride?

Vinyl chloride, the main component of the vinyl frames in our replacement windows, is a result of a reaction between ethylene, oxygen, and hydrogen chloride over a copper catalyst. Also referred to as chloroethylene, it’s handled under special protective procedures due to its hazardous nature.

History of Polyvinyl Chloride

PVC was primarily prepared by German chemist August Wilhelm von Hofmann in 1872. It wasn’t patented until 1912, when German chemist Friedrich Heinrich August Klatte used daylight to polymerize vinyl chloride. While its extreme rigidity kept it from being commercialized, Waldo Lunsbury Semon was able to develop plasticized PVC. This discovery allowed the material to be fully commercialized.
