Single-pane windows were the norm for hundreds of years until the advent of window sealing technology. This made the windows airtight and more energy-efficient. This technology, however, is prone to failing, and it’s not always obvious why it happens.

How to Tell if the Windows Seals Have Failed

WMGB Home Improvement, your glass block windows installers, discusses how to tell if the window seals have failed.

Glass Distortion

An easy way to test if the windows have failed is to see if there’s visual distortion on the surface of the glass. This is due to an argon or krypton leak, which happens when the seal ruptures or outright fails. You can check by standing at a distance and looking at your reflection. If the reflection looks distorted, then there’s a problem with the seal.

Fogging and Hazing

While it’s not uncommon for the windows to fog up and haze, it becomes a concern if these start appearing within the glass. It’s a clear sign that the window seals have failed and will require replacement soon.

Both standard and glass block windows experience this kind of in-pane fogging. Wipe the surface of the glass. If you can’t get rid of any moisture, then it’s coming from between the panes.

Seal Failure Causes

Weather damage is the most common cause of window seal failure. Keep in mind that inclement weather doesn’t necessarily have to damage the seal itself. When the glass is cracked, or the frames are damaged, there’s a high chance that the seal can get affected.

Improper window installation is another common cause of seal failure, which is why it’s important that you work with an experienced window contractor when you’re installing or replacing windows. At WMGB Home Improvement, you can count on us to properly install your standard and glass block windows.
